ABSTRACT:

Among the tens of thousands of Indians who ventured toBritain in the 250 years prior to 1857, there were more than thirty diplomaticand political missions from Indian rulers or would-be rulers to London. TheseIndian agents sought advancement or financial benefits for their Indianpatrons. These envoys negotiated, lobbied, and purchased political support fromBritish politicians and East India Company Directors, as well as seeking toinfluence the British public through speeches and published books, articles,and newspaper columns. This paper examines two such diplomatic missions, bothfrom the Mughal Emperor to the British monarch and Parliament.
