Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work, or borrowing someone else's original ideas, but the terms like "Copying" and "Borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offence.
Facts About Plagiarism
A study by The Center for Academic Integrity found that almost 80% of college students admit to cheating at least once.
According to a survey by the Psychological Record, 36% of undergraduates have admitted to plagiarizing written material.
A poll conducted by US News & World Reports found that 90% of students believe that cheaters are either never caught or have never been appropriately disciplined.
The State of Americans: This Generation and the Next (Free Press, July 1996) states that 58.3% of high school students let someone else copy their work in 1969, and 97.5% did so in 1989.
A study conducted by Ronald M. Aaron & Robert T. Georgia: Administrator Perceptions of Student Academic Dishonesty in Collegiate Institutions found that 257 chief student affairs officers across the country believe that colleges and universities have not addressed the cheating problem adequately.
According to the Gallup Organization (October 6-9, 2000), the top two problems facing the country today are: 1) Education; and 2) Decline in Ethics (both were ranked over crime, poverty, drugs, taxes, guns, environment, and racism, to name a few).
A national survey published in Education Week found that 54% of students admitted to plagiarizing from the internet; 74% of students admitted that at least once during the past school year they had engaged in "Serious" cheating; and 47% of students believe their teachers sometimes choose to ignore students who are cheating. Although many instructors are aware of the problem, most feel powerless to stop it.
A study conducted by Donald L. McCabe titled Faculty Responses to Academic Dishonesty: The Influence of Honor Codes found that 55% of faculty "Would not be willing to devote any real effort to documenting suspected incidents of student cheating".
Initiative
In order to safeguard the quality of its publications, Ignited Minds Journals has developed a new policy on Publishing Integrity. In line with the philosophy of the Committee on Publishing Ethics (COPE) we follow the principle that we have a prime duty to maintain the integrity of the scientific record.
By providing policy as / on ‘Plagiarism & Originality Guidelines’, we aim to optimally assist Journal Managers, Editors, Section Editors, Copy Editors, Layout Editors, Proof Readers, Subscription Managers, Reviewers, Readers (Subscribers and Individuals), Authors as well as Editors-In-Chief with this heavy task – ‘Zero Instances of Plagiarism within Ignited Minds Journals ’.
It is Ignited Minds Journals Editorial Policy to welcome submissions for consideration which are original and not under consideration for any other publication at the same time.
All authors should be aware of the importance of presenting content that is based on their own research and expressed in their own words. Plagiarism is considered to be bad practice and unethical. As part of the Ignited Minds Journals Copyright Policy, we have prepared these guidelines to assist authors in understanding acceptable and unacceptable practice. Our approach is specifically aimed at promoting and protecting authors' work.
Types of Plagiarism
Verbatim Copying
Verbatim copying of more than 10 per cent (or a significant passage or section of text) of another person's work without acknowledgement, references or the use of quotation marks.
Paraphrasing
Improper paraphrasing of another person's work is where more than one sentence within a paragraph or section of text has been changed or sentences have been rearranged without appropriate attribution. Significant improper paraphrasing (more than 10 per cent of a work) without appropriate attribution is treated as seriously as verbatim copying.
Re-Using Parts of Work Without Attribution
Re-use of elements of another person's work, for example a figure, table or paragraph without acknowledgement, references or the use of quotation marks. It is incumbent on the author to obtain the necessary permission to reuse elements of another person's work from the copyright holder.
Self Plagiarism
Ignited Minds Journals requires that all authors sign a copyright form that clearly states that their submitted work has not been published before. If elements of a work have been previously published in another publication, including Ignited Minds Journals publication, the author is required to acknowledge the earlier work and indicate how the subsequent work differs and builds upon the research and conclusions contained in the previous work. Verbatim copying of an author's own work and paraphrasing is not acceptable and we recommend that research should only be reused to support new conclusions.
We recommend that authors cite all previous stages of publication and presentation of their ideas that have culminated in the final work, including conference papers, workshop presentations and listserv communications. This will ensure that a complete record of all communication relating to the work is documented.
Republication of Original work
Original work is published in Ignited Minds Journals with a small number of exceptions only. These exceptions include conference papers. These papers are republished at the discretion of the Editor. The original work is fully and correctly attributed and permission from the appropriate copyright holder obtained. Attributions will be added to archive content that has been found to have been republished in Ignited Minds Journals in the past.
Attribution
References to other publications must be in Harvard style for Ignited Minds Journals . All references should be carefully checked for completeness, accuracy and consistency. You should include all author names and initials and give any journal title in full
When referring to ideas or research by another author, you should cite publications in the text using the first named author's name in one of two ways:
When copying a part of a sentence verbatim, always use quotation marks and correctly cite the original author.
For example:
When copying a section of text verbatim, always indent the paragraph. For example:
If no author is given, use 'Anon'.
At the end of the paper, a reference list in alphabetical order should be supplied as per ‘MLA 7th Edition Quick Reference’, ‘MLA Citation Style’, ‘Harvard Business School Citation Guide’, ‘APA (6th Edition) Referencing’, or ‘References Bibliography’ guidelines. Refer ‘Manuscript Formatting & Style’ for more information.
If an author name is not given, begin with the title of the cited work.
Plagiarism Detection & Handling
The peer-review process is at the heart of the success of academic publishing. As part of our commitment to the protection and enhancement of the peer-review process, Ignited Minds Journals has an obligation to assist the community in all aspects of publishing ethics, especially in cases of (suspected) duplicate submission or plagiarism.

We will investigate new ways of detecting plagiarism and are exploring the effectiveness of plagiarism-detection software.
Investing in Plagiarism - Detection Software
We are committed in continuing our efforts to handle plagiarism. A workable software solution for plagiarism detection can lower the burden on our editors and pay off in terms of resources required to detect plagiarism. We recognize this burden and are committed to searching for the best solutions. We already have world class licensed software’s serving the purpose for us.
Cases of suspected plagiarism (or duplicate submission) are rarely limited to the same journal or publisher. More often than not, multiple journals and publishers are involved. Software solutions, therefore, ideally require cooperation between (all) publishing houses. Ignited Minds Journals will avail the service of CrossCheck.
CrossCheck powered by iThenticate, is an initiative started by CrossRef to help its members actively engage in efforts to prevent scholarly and professional plagiarism. It also allows publishers to verify the originality of published works. Ignited Minds Journals will become the member of CrossRef, where members co-operate to maintain a single database of published articles against which checking can take place.
