ABSTRACT:

In single-chamber solid oxide fuel cells (SC-SOFCs), bothanode and cathode are situated in a common gas chamber and are exposed to amixture of fuel and oxidant. The working principle is based on the differencein catalytic activity of the electrodes for the respective anodic and catholicreactions. The resulting difference in oxygen partial pressure between theelectrodes leads to the generation of an open circuit voltage. Progress inSC-SOFC technology has enabled the generation of power outputs comparable tothose of conventional SOFCs. This paper provides a detailed review of thedevelopment of SC-SOFC technology. The performance of a single-chamber solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) was studied between 350 and 9008C in flowing mixtures of methane, ethane, propane, or liquefied petroleum gas and air with a fuel/air volumeratio of one, where their oxidation proceeded safely without explosion.
